Sirens

02.21.13

The sirens blared. Kimi panicked. Today of all days! She was miles from the safe house with a small arsenal of illicit weapons in the boot. She commanded her vehicle to determine available routes to the safe house. The data on the dashboard told her it was a good fifteen minutes away if she took the freeway, or twenty five if she chose the safe route – not that any routes were truly safe these days, of course. She decided she had too much ammo in the car to risk the freeway. Twenty five minutes would be cutting it fine, and even a minor delay would be enough to cause her to break curfew, but this was still the safer option. If all hell was breaking loose again, the freeway checkpoints would be manned.

Screamstream

The terrors I am about to experience are not my own. They will be implanted into my brain so that I can try and find out what happened to Janie Matthews. She is unable to tell us anything; she was found on Saturday morning at Moor House, screaming constantly, though nothing appeared to be physically wrong with her. She has been kept under sedation ever since, but for this procedure to work she must be fully alert so the doctor is letting her come to. She is almost there now – what started as whimpers are now getting louder and will soon turn into full-blown screams. The technicians hook me up to her in anticipation; my brain has been wired to hers for only a couple of seconds and already I am experiencing an extreme sense of foreboding.

Subhuman

Elliot walked into the laboratory annexe that housed the test subjects. He found the usual sight waiting for him, rows upon rows of subhumans lying in their cots, motionless, all staring at the ceiling. He felt the familiar unease as he made his way halfway across the warehouse-sized room to the row of creatures that were next in line for testing. He walked up to the datatower that served this row and logged in to check everything was as it should be. The nanoimplants inside each subhuman brain reported that all was quiet in their limbic systems. The implants were designed to block the amygdala area of the brain from receiving stimuli, making subhumans unable to experience emotion.

Moon

I never meant to land on the Moon. Still, now that I’m here I suppose I might as well make the most of it. After all, I am the first person to land here, so I should take care to document everything I observe for the benefit of mankind.

The noose is prepared, and I can’t wait to climb on the chair and put it round my neck. I can’t take it any more. Perhaps the young ones can find a way to adapt to this condition. I certainly hope so, otherwise it could signal the end of the human race.

“Here, Scholar Quaa, this is the permutation I was telling you about. It’s the only one that hasn’t followed the same general pattern that the others did. I think we may have found what the Scholars’ Collective was hoping for!”

“Did you use the same world-initialising parameters as you did for all the others, and calibrate the timeline to traverse the bifurcations chaotically?”

“Of course, Scholar – as demanded by the experiment’s specification and exactly as I did for the other permutations. The majority of them produced life, but this is the only one where sentient life has emerged.”

Death Before Dishonour

We sit in this enormous room as we have done for the weeks since our convoy was intercepted by the enemy. There are two hundred men incarcerated here, a big drop from the three hundred that we were when we arrived, and more of us disappear daily. We that remain sit in small groups, or lay all day in our allocated bunks which surround the room. We engage in nothing but small talk, careful to let nothing slip about the journey prior to our capture: the walls may well have ears, and the itinerary of the Starship Empress, along with the nature of her cargo, must not be revealed to the enemy. The entire human race depends upon it.

The writing prompt here is: page 247 of a biography, fictional or otherwise. This is an extract of the biography of JS Tycho, noted 25th Century physicist.

It was this, rather than his unfortunate mutation, that instilled such fear into the alien would-be conquerors of the Colony. They left almost as quickly as they had arrived, and he was declared saviour of the moons of Epsilon Eridani b. Numerous attempts were made to convince him to run for office, but he steadfastly refused.

“You have brought Laura’s ashes?”
“Yes,” he said, handing the urn to the witch. She lifted the lid, peered into the receptacle, then turned her stern gaze towards him.
“I must ask you to reassure me one last time – you are sure she was a pure-hearted woman?”
“She was the kindest person I have ever met,” he said, and the witch’s glare softened as she saw the love in the bereaved man’s countenance. She sighed and put down the urn.
“Fine. I will perform the spell. But you must tell no one of this.” She startled him by grabbing his shoulders and pulling his face towards her own.
No one,” she repeated, and he nodded vigorously as a bead of sweat trickled across his temple. She didn’t let him go immediately, but continued to stare into his eyes for a few moments longer. He was relieved when she released him; he wasn’t afraid of her seeing into his soul – he had nothing to hide – but he was a little worried he might get a glimpse into hers.

Slice of Life

Rodolphus walked into the hall, his belly preceding him by a good ten inches. The annual Soulgatherers’ Banquet was in full swing, the waiters struggling to keep up with the demand for the delectable slices. His gaze swept the room until he saw the group he was looking for: Antimus, Tenemius and Tarsus – seven chins between them, three of them Tarsus’s alone. With them stood a young fellow who could only be a new recruit – he was thin as a rake. Not for much longer, thought Rodolphus with a wry smile as he wandered over to his friends.
