There were many reasons why Tommy didn’t want to move house, but the main one was the creature under his bed. On the last night at the old house, he announced he was going to bed immediately after dinner. His parents exchanged a look as he left the table, and before he closed the bedroom door he heard them whispering to each other. He couldn’t quite hear what they were saying, but caught the word sulking. He rolled his eyes. Let them think he was sulking if they wanted to. After all, they couldn’t know that he was going to bed early to spend as much time as possible with Grumf on their last night together, and he would certainly be doing plenty of sulking over the next few weeks.

I never meant to land on the Moon. Still, now that I’m here I suppose I might as well make the most of it. After all, I am the first person to land here, so I should take care to document everything I observe for the benefit of mankind.

The Scholar was excited. After years of research, his first experiment on a living human was a success. The blind orphan boy’s eyesight was restored. It had taken a few days after the procedure for the child to fully regain his sight; the boy reported that his world was becoming lighter and clearer every day. This was in line with the Scholar’s animal experiments – they had all started off by walking very cautiously, but then became bolder as the days passed. He had assumed that this was due to the initial fear of their new sensation, but this explanation worked just as well.

I hear the whispered password and unbolt the steel door.
“I found a beauty today,” JJ says.
“Shhh,” I say. It isn’t quite dark yet but I don’t want to take any chances. There is an echo on the ground floor level that worries me even during the daytime. I hate having the last watch of the day. Every little creak makes me jump and even my own breath sounds like it’s coming from somewhere close behind me.

The noose is prepared, and I can’t wait to climb on the chair and put it round my neck. I can’t take it any more. Perhaps the young ones can find a way to adapt to this condition. I certainly hope so, otherwise it could signal the end of the human race.

Maath looked up from his work in surprise when the Architect burst into the room. A personal visit like this would normally be arranged days in advance. Maath rose from his chair and started to bow but straightened at the Architect’s impatient gesture.
“Craftsman Maath, I finally have the answer!”
“Sire?”
“The problem with the model – I have found the solution!”

“Here, Scholar Quaa, this is the permutation I was telling you about. It’s the only one that hasn’t followed the same general pattern that the others did. I think we may have found what the Scholars’ Collective was hoping for!”
“Did you use the same world-initialising parameters as you did for all the others, and calibrate the timeline to traverse the bifurcations chaotically?”
“Of course, Scholar – as demanded by the experiment’s specification and exactly as I did for the other permutations. The majority of them produced life, but this is the only one where sentient life has emerged.”

Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the ugliest of them all?
Charlotte stood in the bathroom, looking at her reflection in disgust. No wonder he had left her – who could love a face like this? She scrutinised herself like never before and found flaw after flaw. Lacklustre skin with blotchy patches that make-up never seemed to cover; eyes that were too small and sunken, a jawline that was too wide, hair that was too limp. She left the house to go to work, but could not escape her reflection. Shiny surfaces, shop windows, puddles on the pavement – all conspired to taunt her throughout the day, reminding her of how hideous she was. By the time she returned home, she was in a state of extreme agitation. She grabbed a marble paperweight from the living room and made for the bathroom. Read the rest of this entry »

Tenki was nearly asleep when he heard whispered voices outside the hut – one of the Elders had come to speak to his father. He lay as still as possible so they would think he was asleep. His father always spoke of more interesting things when he thought Tenki couldn’t hear him.

Keirit spent his sixteenth birthday doing what most boys did when they turned eight. His mother pleaded with him not to leave the Caves, but he was adamant.
“You can’t stop me any more, Mother. I have come of age now and no longer need your permission. You have forced me to stay underground for long enough.”
“But I have been keeping you safe. The visions -”
“I’ve heard enough about your visions. Eight winters ago you should have let me out, as all my friends’ mothers did for them. Instead you kept me here because of nothing more than a bad dream.” He shook her off and made his way towards the Silver Cavern, where his childhood friends had agreed to meet him. They were to escort him to the surface and help him get adjusted to life on the outside. It wouldn’t be long before winter came to an end and everyone would have to make their way back to the Caves, so Keirit didn’t want to waste any more time underground.
